Landscape Design

PROJECT TITLE: Lydney Harbour Alive!
CLIENT: Lydney Harbour Partnership
LOCATION: Lydney, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire
SERVICES: Master Planning and Bid Preparation
COMPLETION DATE: July 2007

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
Following on from the success of the Heritage Lottery grant, we were asked to project manage an application for Big Lottery funding under the Living Landmarks programme. The application was for the construction of a visitor centre, traditional boatyard, including a new basin and associated recreational facilities. The total cost of the project was £24 million, £17.2 million of which was to be obtained from the lottery grant. The objective of the project was to bring additional investment into Lydney Harbour, which had become neglected and in need of significant regeneration. The development included the creation of new high quality housing and reintroduction of skilled traditional trades into the area associated with the boat building industry.

The main emphasis of the landscape input into the master plan was the development of a community forest to promote outdoor leisure activities through proposals for a trim-trail, mountain bike track, circular walks, elevated lookout point and playgrounds for various age groups. The development would have significant knock-on effects throughout the Forest of Dean.

KEY CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS:
To achieve an economically sustainable design, a considerable amount of research and consultation was carried out to provide the best solution. Consultation about this historically sensitive site was conducted with interested stakeholders to design a boatyard and visitor centre in keeping with the Scheduled Ancient Monument status of the adjacent harbour.
