BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
This new leisure centre was developed and built to replace an existing facility in an adjacent location, which had been subject to flooding. Parkwood Consultancy Services provided master planning services at the initial stages of the project to achieve planning permission and went on to provide project management and liaise with the planning department to discharge the planning conditions associated with the external works through the submission of detailed plans, specifications as well as management and maintenance reports. The site is boundaried by the River Cherwell, a canal and two busy roads. These restrictions impacted on the design and required careful consideration to ensure all site users requirements were accommodated.
KEY CHALLENGES:
·Close proximity to River Cherwell and a restricted site.
·Balancing the expectations of the client and the Local Authority.
·Space restrictions due to urban location.
SOLUTIONS:
·A green wall engineering solution to maximise space for circulation and parking at the centre whilst achieving a visually acceptable solution from the opposing bank of the river.
·Close liaison with all parties throughout the process.
·Planting carefully selected to avoid visibilty issues with adjacent roads.
ACHIEVEMENTS:
·Planning conditions successfully discharged.
·Design implemented on site to the satisfaction of all parties.
