Celebrating 2 awards for construction excellence and value for money
11/06/2009
In May, Sidcup Leisure Centre won the Community Benefit category at the annual Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Awards South East.
The award is an acknowledgement that Bexley Council, working in partnership with its private sector partners, has produced an excellent facility that is generating real benefits for the residents of the London Borough of Bexley.
This week the centre won the Sustainability Category in the London District Surveyors Awards Building Excellence Award 2009. These awards are focused on encouraging and celebrating examples of good construction.
"This is a great accolade for all involved," said Bexley Council`s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Culture, Cllr Peter Catterall. "When the centre was complete we knew we had something special that was pleasing to the eye as well as being functional, but to be recognised by such distinguished bodies is a real triumph.
"A lot of teamwork went into producing this centre which came in on time and on budget. It is already a real hub of the local community and a real asset to the borough."
The centre is the result of a partnership between the London Borough of Bexley and the Boxwood Consortium made up of Boxwood Leisure Ltd, Parkwood (PFI) Projects Ltd (trading as Parkwood Consultancy Services), Nab Capital, Sport England, Parkwood Leisure Ltd, Emcor Facilities Services Ltd, LA Architects, Burke Rickhards, Gleeds Ltd and Gleeson Construction Services Ltd, which is also responsible for the new leisure centres at Crook Log and Erith.
Sidcup Leisure Centre was officially opened for business last year by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson.
The new centre has been an overwhelming success. The visits to Sidcup during the first year of opening were more than double the number of visits to the old Lamorbey Swimming Centre - up from 140,568 to 344,635. Swimming visits alone at Sidcup rose by 92% to131,988.
